All my rats are handled daily, and kept on
Ecobed
(sourced locally by me at Hazleton Horse Feeds, but available anywhere that sells horse bedding) to reduce the likelihood of respiratory problems, with
paper-based cat litter in the litter trays (which they mostly
use!). They are fed on a variation of the
Shunamite diet,
which currently includes Alpha Herbal Rabbit Deluxe and/or Mr
Johnson's Supreme as a base, with added bran flakes, oats, and
Vitalin dog kibble. I give pieces of dry pasta as treats only since
I found that including it as part of their main diet was making
them fat! The rats also get fresh food a few times a week, with
what's given varying depending on their needs.
Currently my
cages include a Ferret Nation, an Explorer, a Duetto and a
number of Freddy 2s, Critters and Marys; groups are moved
between the cages available depending on their age, size,
mobility and number in the group. Cages are kept well-furnished
with hammocks, igloos and toys.
If you'd like to visit the rattery, please feel free to email me
and I'll do my best to arrange some time for you to do so.
